Reinforcing its commitment to social responsibility and sustainable development, Team Techkriti, IIT Kanpur, on Thursday organized a large-scale Cleanliness Drive at Ganga Barrage, aimed at promoting environmental awareness and encouraging collective action toward a cleaner and greener ecosystem.

Guided by the belief that “Change begins with us,” the initiative focused on sensitizing citizens about responsible waste management and the urgent need to protect the Ganga — one of India’s most revered and ecologically significant rivers.

The drive witnessed active participation from members of Team Techkriti as well as students from across IIT Kanpur. Volunteers undertook extensive cleaning of the riverbank area, removing Plaster of Paris (POP) statues, plastic waste, and other non-biodegradable materials left behind along the Ganga’s edge. The removal of POPs idols, in particular, contributed significantly to restoring the ecological integrity of the riverbank, given the material’s harmful environmental impact.

During the campaign, volunteers also interacted with residents to raise awareness about the consequences of river pollution, improper waste disposal, and the long-term environmental and health risks associated with contaminated water bodies.

The cleanliness drive aligns with IIT Kanpur’s broader mission to promote environmental stewardship, responsible citizenship, and sustainable development practices. It also underscores Techkriti’s evolving role as a platform that not only showcases technology and innovation but also fosters social awareness and civic responsibility.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment from participants to support environmental conservation efforts. Team Techkriti plans to conduct more such sustainability-driven initiatives in the coming months, encouraging both the IIT Kanpur community and the public at large to take active ownership of their surroundings.

With this drive, Techkriti marks a significant contribution toward building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for the city of Kanpur and beyond.
